Strickland & Holt: Revatilizing a High Street Icon

Location: Yarm High Street, Stockton on Tees

Client: Strickland & Holt

Scope: Concept Design, Planning, Building Control, Project Management

The refurbishment and extension of the historic Strickland & Holt store on Yarm High Street presented us with a unique challenge – to breathe new life into a beloved 1854 building while ensuring it remains a vibrant hub for the community and thrives in the modern retail landscape.

Having enjoyed a longstanding and productive relationship with the client, we collaborated closely to develop a design that respects the store's heritage while introducing a contemporary edge. The existing front facade received a refresh, retaining its classic charm. The most significant change came to the rear of the building, where a modern glazed extension now allows for an abundance of natural light to flood the newly created retail space.

A new creative Hub

The project wasn't just about aesthetics; it was about functionality too. A dedicated small business hub has been incorporated within the store, offering a platform for local artisan craft makers to showcase their work. This space also hosts regular events, further strengthening the store's connection to the local community.

Throughout this project, we ensured the new design elements complemented the existing architecture. The result is a harmonious blend of old and new, creating a truly special shopping experience for Yarm residents and visitors alike. We're incredibly proud to have played a part in securing the future of this historic landmark.
